Ayurvedic Insomnia Treatment

Insomnia or sleeplessness is a sleep disorder in which the affected person has trouble in sleeping. Insomniac person may have difficulty falling sleep and has disturbed lifestyle. Insomnia usually leads to low energy, irritability, depression and daytime sleepiness. Insomnia can be caused by variety of reasons such as psychological stress, chronic pain, heartburn, heart failure, certain medications and drugs. Insomnia can be both short term or long term and can be treated by lifestyle changes and following proper sleep hygiene.


There are various causes of insomnia which include stress, hectic work schedules and poor sleeping habits. Though avoidable these factors lead to inadequate sleep or insomnia. Sometimes eating too much late in evening or night also causes inability to sleep in the night. Some other common causes of insomnia are mental health disorders or anxiety disorders, sleep-related disorders and medications. Certain medical conditions such as chronic pain, diabetes, heart disease, asthma, overactive thyroid and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) also contribute to insomnia. Intake of caffeine, alcohol and nicotine also interfere with sleep patterns leading to insomnia.

When you are going to bed, close the right nostril of your nose with your finger and breathe with your left nostril. Do this for 4-5 minutes and you would slowly feel sleepy. Alternatively you can apply mustard oil on the both soles of your feet with opposite palms. Means, you should apply the oil to your left sole with your right palm and to the right sole with your left palm.
